Who Is Gus Poyet, Which English Clubs Has He Managed And Why Has He Been Sacked By Bordeaux?


GUS POYET has been sacked by Ligue 1 side Bordeaux after going on a scathing rant following the sale of striker Gaetan Laborde.

The 50-year-old manager has been in charge of the French side since January but was dismissed from his role on Friday morning.

Who is Gus Poyet?

Poyet is a former Uruguayan midfielder who used to play for Chelsea and Tottenham. He made over 100 appearances for the Blues from 1997 to 2001 and helped the side win the UEFA Cup winner’s cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and FA Cup trophy and the Charity Shield.

Poyet also made 26 appearances for his international side Uruguay, making his debut in 1993 in a friendly against Peru.

In 1995, he helped his side win the Copa America and was also voted the best player in his position at the tournament.

In July 2006, he became a player/assistant manager at Swindon alongside former teammate Dennis Wise.

His first managerial appointment came in 2009 when he was announced as the new manager of (then) League One side Brighton and Hove Albion.

He led the side to promotion as the Football League One champions in the 2010/11 season which also saw him awarded the League One Manager of the Year.

Since Brighton, Poyet has been the manager at Sunderland, AEK Athens, Betis and Shanghai Shenhua before moving to Bordeaux in January.
