BRITISH children are undoubtedly looking forward to the end of the summer term, eager to get out and enjoy some sunshine.

But when are the kids officially off and what are the term dates for the 2018/19 academic year?

When does the summer holiday start?

School holiday dates in the UK can vary between the different local education authorities but most English schools are due to break up on July 23 and return on September 3.

Most schools in Wales will break up three days earlier but return on the same day.

They enjoy six weeks off school before returning in early September.

In Scotland, the holidays start on July 1 and return on August 13.

What are the school holiday and half term dates for the 2018/2019 academic year?

Again, school holiday and term time dates can vary depending on which part of the country you live in.

The dates below are just a rough guide, but check your local council website for the exact dates.

Autumn half term generally runs between October 19, 2018 and October 29, 2018.

The Christmas break runs between December 21, 2018 to January 7, 2019.

Spring half term will generally run between February 15, 2019 and February 25, 2019.

Easter holidays run between April 5, 2019 to April 23, 2019.

Summer half term will run between May 24, 2-19 and June 3, 2019.

The summer holidays are due to start around July 19 and end on September 3, 2019.

Why are holidays so expensive during the school holidays?

As hotels, airlines and tour operators know that more people will want to jet off during school holidays, many hike up their prices.

Recent research has revealed that some holidays are nine time more expensive when schools are off when compared to term time.

Now there are growing calls for the government to intervene and force tour operators to lower their prices during the holidays so less children are taken out of school during term time.
