Turmeric along with many other spices have been associated with weight loss for many years. It contains a compound called cur cumin which is an antioxidant that can play a role in losing weight. It is also very low in calories which means dieters can still incorporate turmeric into their diet while still being in a calorie deficit. Around one tablespoon of the powder contains just 29 calories.

David Wiener, Training Specialist at Al-based fitness and lifestyle coaching app Freeletics has shared with the Express.co.uk how consuming turmeric can help aid weight loss as well as providing many other benefits for your body.

Anti-inflammatory

David says: “Turmeric contains a natural anti-inflammatory compound called curcumin, which helps your body to fight foreign bacteria and also helps to repair damage.

“While acute inflammation is beneficial for your body and allows for effective fighting bacteria, long term internal inflammation has recently been linked to a number of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease and some cancers.

“Thus, including turmeric in your diet can help control inflammation for long term health benefits.”

A good digestive system is key to lose weight.

Turmeric tea is just one simple way of making your digestive system healthier.

When overeating or consuming foods that are hard for the body to break down and burn, digestion of these foods slows down, meaning some of it will get stored as fat.

Anti-oxidant

David continues: “Turmeric drastically increases the antioxidant capacity of the body. Oxidative damage (caused by unstable atoms called free radicals) that occur naturally in your body, leads to a number of diseases and also speeds up the aging process.

“Compounds found in turmeric neutralize free radicals due to its chemical structure and boosts the activity of your body’s own antioxidant enzymes.”

Antioxidants can help reduce body weight and also improve the body’s metabolism.

Lowers the risk of diseases

David explains how consuming turmeric can have many benefits, one of which is lowering the risk of heart disease.

He says: “Turmeric can help improve the function of endothelium which is found in the lining of blood vessels, this helps to regulate blood pressure and blood clotting.

“It also helps in maintaining heart health by reducing cholesterol oxidation, plaque build-up, clot formation, reducing bad cholesterol (LDL) and reducing pro-inflammatory response.”

Along with blocking fat cells and converting fat, turmeric also stimulates cells to make new mitochondria, which act as a stomach for each cell to break down nutrients, meaning more fat can be broken down.

Increasing intake of turmeric is easier than many might first thing, with lots of simple ways to consume the spice.

It can be added to food to make them tasty, added to hot water to create a detoxifying tea or even added to cold drinks.
