As President Donald Trump’s Cabinet members have ramped up hawkish calls against Iran’s aggressions in the Gulf of Oman, his ears are tuning into the likes of Fox News host Tucker Carlson in advising against a military strike, The Daily Beast reported Wednesday.
Carlson has privately advised Trump against taking action on Iran and has bashed the more hawkish members of the administration, like National Security Adviser John Bolton, according to the report.
Carlson in recent monologues on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” has compared Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s recent escalation of tensions with Iran over the oil tanker attacks to that of the failed search for weapons of mass destruction in Iran.
“We’re still paying a price for that,” Carlson has said.
The Trump administration has decertified the Iran nuclear deal signed and paid for by former President Barack Obama’s administration, reimposed sanctions on doing business with Iran, taken on a maximum pressure campaign to deter an Iranian build up of a nuclear arsenal, and designated Iran’s Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization.
The oil tankers alleged to have been attacked are Norwegian and Japanese.
Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., has said it warrants a military response, but President Trump has recently said oil tanker attacks on other countries are “minor” compared to a build up of a nuclear arsenal.
