The overall number of registered sex offenders at large in England and Wales has doubled to 60,294 in the 12 years since figures began being compiled, it emerged.
And a record number – 2,228 sexual offenders – were cautioned or convicted for breaching notification requirements to police in the year up to the end of March.
Annual figures released by the Ministry of Justice reveal that in general, London and the Home Counties have a lower ratio of registered sex offenders living in the community.
Meanwhile, six of the 10 areas where the ratio of registered sex offenders is highest are in the North of England and four are in Wales.
