For many high school graduates Schoolies is made out to be one of the best weeks of their young lives but the reality may be very different. A Schoolies attendee has spoken out about the overrated side of the week along with fake IDs, undercover cops and the crazy amount of drugs being sold.
This Schoolies Diary entry is from Sarah, an 18-year-old who just graduated school in Sydney. News.com.au has changed her name to keep her identity secret.
Let me start out by saying that Schoolies is totally overrated.
I thought it was going to be full of lots of cool parties and meeting new people, but so far it is just overcrowded clubs full of creepy guys and undercover cops.
And even just getting to the Gold Coast was a massive ordeal.
My friend and I were so excited about catching our flight on Saturday that we arrived at the airport super early and obviously headed straight to the bar to pass the time.
We accidentally got really drunk and missed our flight. I felt so bad because a plane full of people got delayed because of us.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, I also lost my credit card somewhere in the airport.
So we went to the help desk and I immediately burst out crying about my card and the fact we were going to have to buy new tickets, which would have been like $300 each.
My friend started flirting with the guy at the help desk and somehow managed to get us free tickets on the next flight.
When we finally arrived, we realised the girls who booked the accommodation didn’t actually book it for the first night, so we ended up having to stay at my aunty’s apartment.
We went to a bunch of different clubs that night and the vibe was really weird. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t exactly good either.
The friend I came with is underage but she has a really good fake ID and we almost got through the whole night without anyone noticing.
At one point, we tried to get back into this club that we had already gotten into twice and there was a new security guard and he refused to believe my friend was 18.
He called the police and they came and scanned her ID and she actually got away with it.
I know like 20 other people with fake IDs or who have used other people’s IDs and they have all been caught and fined like $400.
There are also undercover cops in all the clubs trying to catch people out so even if you do get in you still have to be wary.
A group of my friends were talking to a guy at a club and he was asking them about fake IDs and they were all talking about where they got theirs.
Then he asked them if they wanted to see his and, I kid you not, he pulled out his police badge.
Pro Schoolies tip: If you are underage don’t skimp out on your fake ID and don’t go bragging about it to random people in the club.
Or if you are underage, it is probably just best not to come the second week at all.
The next day we finally got to check into our hotel room at The Mantra and we got a list of strict rules we have to follow.
We have to show our Schoolies lanyard to security every single time we enter and exit the building. You would think by now they would know who we are but apparently not.
There are also no visitors allowed in the hotel after 6pm so you can’t have friends over at night.
Also if you are drinking alcohol they won’t even let you out onto the street with it.
Thankfully, my parents paid for the hotel, but I would be annoyed if I spent my money and had to follow all these ridiculous rules.
That night we went to an under 18s party and it was TERRIBLE.
I have never been an emotional drunk but I got so wasted and cried for like two ours and called my mum.
There were also so many creepy guys around. It gets annoying constantly having to tell a different guy to leave you alone when you are just trying to have fun with your friends.
Also another thing I have noticed is so many people are on drugs. You will look around at a club and it is so easy to pick out who is off their faces.
I personally don’t do drugs but I could very easily get some if I wanted to.
I have a few friends up here who have been selling MDMA and weed and in under two days they had already made over $3000.
All they have to do is go around and knock on people’s hotel rooms and ask them what they want. It is insane.
So far Schoolies has been overrated and I wish I had lowered my expectations before I got here.
We are going to a pool party at the Hilton today though and Luke from Love Island is going to be there so hopefully things start to improve.
