The White House will not move forward with a plan to cut billions of dollars from congressionally approved foreign aid budget, sources say, Politico reports.
It was not clear why the White House changed tack. Members of Congress, including some of Trump’s fellow Republicans as well as Democrats, feared that the plan could scuttle the budget deal reached last month as well as harm foreign aid programs.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and several GOP lawmakers also warned President Donald Trump the move would be detrimental to national security and to bipartisan negotiations ahead of another shutdown deadline.
Reuters and CNN also reported the change of direction, also citing anonymous sources.
