‘I was deeply unhappy for many years’: Rebecca Ferguson speaks candidly about her mental health as she admits she needed help from friends to ‘take her out of it’

Rebecca Ferguson admitted she was ‘deeply unhappy’ for years as she spoke candidly about her mental health on Thursday’s This Morning.

The singer, 33, admitted she had a ‘tough childhood’ and had ‘bad relationships’ that led her to struggle for a long time, though she claimed she has now ‘finally found happiness’ after having help from friends.

Making an appearance on the show with musician Nile Rodgers who she has made a new song with, Rebecca said: ‘I’ve finally found happiness, if I’m honest I was deeply unhappy for many years but I was totally unaware that I was unhappy, but in the past three years I found happiness.’

When asked by co-host Phillip Schofield what had led to her struggle with her mental health, she went on: ‘I had a tough childhood and I was in bad relationships that I take ownership for.

‘I needed someone to take me out of it and Nile, I haven’t told him this, but he was one of the people to take me out of it.’

Of how her perspective on life has changed since, Rebecca claimed: ‘I don’t wish my life away anymore, it’s just what’s today going to bring and what can I do.’

Rebecca also spoke about her friendship with Nile, and said he had helped her to deal with her disillusionment with music.

‘If I’m honest when I first met Nile I had started to become disillusioned with music and I felt like I was on a conveyor belt,’ she explained.

‘But then I met Nile and he spoke so passionately about music… he changed my life and he’s changed how I view music so I am so grateful to Nile.’

Gushing about Rebecca, Nile called her an ‘amazing’ artist who had ‘such a soulful voice’ as he reflected on their song Nothing Left But Family.

He said: ‘Rebecca is not only the most talented person you ever want to meet but she is the kindest nicest person, she’s disarmingly charming.’

Rebecca recorded the song at Abbey Road, and she said it was an ‘amazing’ experience to work in the iconic recording studio.

‘It’s amazing, just as amazing as you imagine it to be there is something magical about Abbey Road,’ she said. ‘I find writing lyrics easy, I find musically I am better I don’t know if that’s because of the atmosphere that musically it inspires you.’
