Doctors have placed Alexei Navalny, arch-rival of Mr Putin, in an induced coma to stop his convulsions after suspected-toxins were poured into his tea. Mr Navalny is now in Germany for emergency medical treatment. His wife Yulia travelled with him to Germany.
The flight to Berlin left the Siberian city of Omsk just after 8am local time today.
He is being treated at the Charité hospital in Berlin.
Mr Navalny’s spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, tweeted: “Massive thanks to everyone for their support.
“The struggle for Alexei’s life and health is just beginning.”
Mr Navalny’s wife, Yulia, has accused Mr Putin’s regime of delaying her husband’s evacuation to Germany.
It is claimed that the type of poison used in these assassination attempts can disappear from the human body within three days, leaving no traces.
Mr Navalny has been an outspoken critic of corruption in Russia and has served multiple jail terms for his activism.
Joe Biden has described the incident as “unacceptable” and vowed that, if elected, he would “stand up to autocrats like Putin”.
In 2019 Russian security forces raided the offices of Mr Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation.
In 2020 his organisation was declared a “foreign agent”.
