A pizza takeaway has been handed a ‘one’ food hygiene rating after a surprise inspection from the council.
Inspector Juliette took a film crew around with her for Channel 5’s Grime and Punishment, and she wasn’t impressed by what she saw.
Things didn’t get off to a good start when she realised the hand wash station is just the sink in the loo, which isn’t good practice.
She then gets down on her hands and knees to check how clean things look under the counters.
She told the new manager: “Under here there’s quite a lot of debris.
“I would say the level of overall cleaning is pretty poor.”
But one of her biggest issues comes when she looks at the food storage areas.
The freezer has a large crack on it and the seals are loose, meaning it difficult to clean it properly.
But when she looks inside the fridge she’s very concerned about how meat is being stored.
She asks: “What’s this? It’s raw isn’t it.
“You’ve got salad and things underneath and that bag could quite easily leak.”
There’s then a disagreement when she spots cooked meat being kept with raw meat.
The owner claims the meat isn’t cooked, but Juliette points out that it definitely is.
Swab tests on the chopping board came back at 378 on her handy hygiene meter, when the acceptable level is less than 200.
She tells the manager: “That suggests to me you’re not cleaning effectively.
“This is really serious, and if you don’t get this right you could kill somebody. That’s the bottom line.”
Things get even worse when she goes outside and sees the overflowing bins.
Juliette has a very personal reason for being passionate about her job.
She says: “I had salmonella from a meal that I had. I was really quite ill and I thought, I don’t want this to happen to anyone.
“I want to feel safe and I want my friends and family to be safe when they’re eating out.
“I get really annoyed when there’s a real torrent of excuses as to why.”
She then hands the takeaway a hygiene score of just one and a long list of things to sort out and fix.
She will return in the future to check everything has been sorted.
- Grime and Punishment is on Channel 5 at 8pm on Thursday.
