North Korea has ordered schools to start the new semester on September 1, despite the ongoing pandemic. Authorities are so concerned about losing more time that they have decided to risk the safety of children by reopening in just a matter of days, an anonymous source told NK News.

However, children who display symptoms of coronavirus such as a high temperature will not be able to go home.

Instead they will be isolated, forced to continue studying and be monitored by teachers.

According to the source, schools will only be required to report their concerns if seven percent of students in a class have fevers of 37.5 degrees or higher.

Schools must alert provincial, municipal and county disease control authorities, who may decide to shut down the school.

However, rather than close, the source said students with high fevers could be made to study in isolation.

With North Korean authorities placing a priority on starting the semester and making up for lost class time, the source speculates the health of students could rank as a lower priority for officials.

Parents remain concerned for the safety of their children as COVID-19 continues to threaten public safety.

There are many parents of pre-schoolers who are refusing to send their children to school according to the source.

Many parents of elementary, middle, high school and university students want to keep their children at home.

The source said despite the North Korean government saying there are no COVID-19 cases, people have said the coronavirus crisis has caused a “rash” of fever like illnesses to surround them.

They added: “Many parents are conflicted and unable to make clear decisions because of the concern that keeping their children out of school will negatively impact where their kids are placed after graduation.”

North Korean authorities have ordered education and public health related officials to carefully monitor whether students have fevers following the start of the school year.

Students will be given their first temperature test at school entrances by staff from local hospitals.

They will be tested again inside their classrooms by their teachers or other school staff.

The source said: “When students did their preparatory school day in the past, entire schools gathered in school yards before heading home.

“This time, students will only gather with others from the same class.”

The source added entire student bodies will not gather together for attendance checks or to conduct marches and will instead “quietly” get their temperatures checked and head to class.

North Korean authorities have also ordered students in the same classes at elementary and middle schools to refrain from the custom of gathering together in one spot and then singing while walking to school.

The students have instead been instructed to head to school alone, according to the source, who also reported that the authorities have ordered the “seals” on classroom doors at schools throughout the country to be removed.

The facilities have been ordered to undergo “massive disinfection and cleaning” by August 29 ahead of two national holidays.

The source said: “Schools have already mobilized people and divided them up into groups to work on specific days so there won’t be too many people at the schools at one time.”

After the disinfection and cleaning of the schools are complete, students and faculty will be given a day of rest on August 30 before a “preparatory school day” on August 31.
