The Celebrity Big Brother race row caused an ‘international incident’ that shook the entire world.

Jade Goody, Danielle Lloyd and Jo O’Meara’s appalling coments and behaviour towards Indian actress Shilpa Shetty created a ‘major diplomatic row’ between India and the UK.

The trio were accused of ‘bullying’ and making racist comments towards the Bollywood star – most famously when Jade referred to her as “Shilpa Poppadom”.

Glamour model Danielle said Shilpa should “f*** off home”, while S Club 7 star Jo questioned if Indians were thin because they are “sick all the time”.

All three profusely apologised after leaving the house, insisting they were not racist, with Jade donating all of her fee to charity.

Here is the shocking full extent of the race row, the worldwide reaction and what those involved had to say once they left the Big Brother house in January 2007:

Offensive comments

Jo, Jade and Danielle were at the centre of a racism storm

It was actually Jade’s mum Jackie Budden who first began to make offensive remarks to Shilpa – referring to her as “the Indian” and claiming she could not pronounce her name.

Jade’s boyfriend and future husband Jack Tweed then called Shilpa a “c***” and a “w*****”.

Danielle referred to Shilpa as a “dog” and was called into the Diary Room to explain her comments after saying: “I think she should f*** off home.”

After claiming Shilpa had undercooked a chicken, Jo said: “That’s why they’re all thin, because they’re sick all the time, because they’re ill.”

While Danielle, who asked if people in India or China eat with their hands, added: “I don’t know where their fingers have been.”

All three girls repeatedly began mimicking Shilpa’s accent, but claimed they also did it in front of her and she was

The biggest clash came during a row over Oxo cubes, as Jade accused Shilpa of being “fake” and a “liar”.

When Shilpa asked Jo is she was going to say anything she burst out laughing, with the S Club star and Danielle slammed for repeatedly giggling throughout the row.

Jade then referred to Shetty as “Shilpa Poppadom” to Danielle – later clarifying in the Diary Room that she had no racist intent.

Reaction

The racism row turned into an international incident and Prime Minister Tony Blair faced a former complaint from Indian foreign minister Anand Sharm.

It reached Prime Minister’s questions and on Question Time, Edwina Currie said: “They are witches with a capital B.”

Gordon Brown, who visited India, said: “The Indians want reassurance we’re a nation of fairness and tolerance.”

There were 44,500 complaints made to Ofcom, who put sanctions on Channel 4 after finding them guilty of breaching the broadcasting code three times.

Jade Goody

It complete contrast to the first time she left the Big Brother house in 2002, Jade was told she had been evicted in a pre-record and walked out to silence.

Presenter Davina McCall explained that because of the “controversy and heightened feelings around the evictees” there was no crowd.

Jade was immediately shown two video packages, one showing the controversy caused, and another looking back at the comments she had made about Shilpa.

“It’s nasty,” confessed stunned Jade, who owned up to what she had done straight away.

“I am not a racist person but I can see why it has the impact it has had because I look like a complete an utter…nasty, small…a person I don’t like myself.

Someone in the crowd shouted “stop saying it” as Jade tried to explain the thinking behind her “Poppadom” comment.

She said: “What I had said wasn’t thought of like this is the cruel nasty horrible word.”

Davina hit back and said it was said in a cruel and nasty way and accused her of “b****ing” behind Shilpa’s back before making it worse by telling her.

“I am not a racist and I sincerely with my hand on my heart apologise to anyone I’ve offended out there,” said Jade.

“That was not meant in the way it was shown. It was nothing to do with editing as you can’t edit me to look like something I’m not.”

She added: “It wasn’t because she was different. Jermaine was in there and he is a black man. If I was a racist I wouldn’t have ate any of the food that Shilpa cooked. I wouldn’t have ate chicken curry.”

After leaving the house, Jade apologised profusely for her behaviour in several interviews and donated her Celebrity Big Brother fee to charity.

Danielle Lloyd

Danielle remained in the Big Brother house for the longest out of the trio in concern – reaching the final and exiting with Jack Tweed.

She received less hostility after making up with Shilpa in the house and apologising directly to her for her comments.

During her exit chat, Danielle said: “I feel terrible. It was just obviously in the heat of the moment. Everyone was arguing and I’ve just…I don’t know…it’s just come out.

“When I was sitting there laughing I wasn’t laughing at Shilpa. It was just nerves. I didn’t know how to feel. I hate confrontation. For them two to be arguing it was just a natural reaction to start laughing.”

Davina called Danielle out for backing down and apologising once she was pulled up, which she claimed was easy to do.

Danielle denied that there was any racist intent and admitted she had got on with Shilpa once Jade left the house.

She said: “I think Shilpa will be very understanding because she’s a very understanding person. That’s the type of person she is. I know because I’ve spoken to Shilpa in the last few days.

“She said you shouldn’t follow the crowd because I have that type of personality where people can tell me what to do or take advantage of me.”

When asked what she had learned, Danielle replied: “Not to be such a b****.”

Jo O’Meara

“Oh my god,” came the reply from grinning Jo when she was told about the controversy her actions had caused.

After watching a video package, Jo claimed: “You’ve made it so much worse than it was.”

“It does look very bad. Looking at it like that it looks terrible. It didn’t feel like that in there.

“I’m not a racist person at all. My cousin is married to an Indian man for one and my cousin’s are half Indian and their family is with me all the time.”

Jo expressed some dismay and questioned whether she had said things that were just shown to her.

She continued: “I didn’t ever mean it in that way. I’m not a racist person at all. I know that I’m not. I didn’t even know I was doing it then, it wasn’t a personal attack on her.”

In defence of her laughing, Jo claimed she gets the giggles during uncomfortable situaitons.

The singer explained: “When I see something bad happen on the street or I get bad news about family members my first reaction is to laugh as thats how I deal with bad news and I want to burst out laughing now…”

Not finding it funny, Davina replied: “I wouldn’t.”

Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa won the series

Shilpa went on to win the series and came out to an incredible reception from the crowd.

Speaking to Davina, she said: “Things happen, people make mistakes and we all learn from them.

“But I can say one thing for sure. Jade didn’t mean to be racist. She isn’t a racist. I really don’t want to leave England putting anyone in trouble.

“This country has given me so much. I just want to thank all of Great Britain for giving me this fantastic opportunity to make my country proud.”
