Mum’s ‘genius’ $29 Kmart hack goes viral

A South Australian mum’s “genius” idea to keep her daughter safe as she worked outside in her backyard has gone viral, attracting more than 10K likes from impressed parents.

Cheralee Jansen, from South Australia, posted a series of photos to a Kmart Facebook Group recently, revealing a pop up structure set up in her backyard.

The foldable pen is used to hold pets in, but Cheralee instead placed her bub inside while she finished off her work nearby.

Cheralee told she had the idea during a stroll through her local Kmart, after struggling with the concept of leaving her baby indoors.

“I didn’t like leaving my little one inside while I was outside hanging out the washing,” Cheralee said.

“I also had no where to put her while I was tidying the yard up.”

For just $29, Cheralee decided to give Kmart’s foldable pet play pen a go.

“With the ground being wet and cold, I thought I’d try it out and she just loves it,” she said.

“I put toys in there for her and she is safe from bugs as well.”

The Kmart play pen is advertised as a “secure space for your puppies or kittens” to play in, the pen can clearly be used in more ways than one.

She decided to post her hack online, but asked people to be kind and avoid posting any “harsh comments”.

“I know it supposed to be for pets,” she wrote.

“It’s brand new and she enjoys playing outside while I hang the washing out.”

But instead of being trolled for using an animal pen to keep her baby in, the “sensational” idea received huge support, attracting more than 10K likes and 2K comments from the group.

Many comments praised Cheralee’s idea, saying “This. Is. Genius”.

“What a wonderful way to keep her safe while your mind is busy doing household chores,” one woman wrote.

Another said: “Now that’s brilliant love your work!”

“Throw a heap of toys in there and she should be set for hours.”

According to Cheralee, she hadn’t received any negative feedback at all and was completely overwhelmed by the viral response to her idea.

“I didn’t think the response would be like this at all, I’ve had no rude comments at all,” she said,

“I was worried I would, but the other good thing about the playpen is that you can take it anywhere like parks, the beach, and on camping trips.”
