MTV Video Music Awards WILL still take place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn with either limited audience or none at all

  • New York Governor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement during a briefing on Monday
  • The 62-year-old politician explained that ‘the event will follow all safety guidance, including limited or no audience’ 
  • The announcement comes just a day after BET successfully ran an award show virtually which was simulcasted on major television network, CBS, for the first time ever 
  • The last time was in 2013 as the signature moment of the show came when Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke put on a very raunchy performance of We Can’t Stop and Blurred Lines 
  • New York will enter Phase III of reopening on July 6 

The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards will proceed to be held at the Barclays Center on August 30 in Brooklyn with either a scaled-down audience or none at all amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement comes just a day after BET successfully ran an award show virtually which was simulcasted on major television network, CBS, for the first time ever.

It will be the first time the event was held inside of the Barclays Center in seven years.

The last time was in 2013 as the signature moment of the show came when Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke put on a very raunchy performance of We Can’t Stop and Blurred Lines complete with the 27-year-old Hannah Montana star sticking her tongue out while twerking on the 43-year-old son of Alan Thicke.

He also reunited with his boyband NSYNC during his 15-minute medley before accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. 

This years iteration of the show has been up in the air due to the coronavirus as last month an MTV spokesperson told Variety: ‘We’re exploring with government officials, the medical community and key stakeholders on how to safely hold the 2020 VMAs at Barclays Center on August 30th. 

‘The health of everyone involved is our number one priority. Additionally, we are working on several contingency plans to bring music’s biggest night to audiences everywhere.’
