‘In memory of the old boy’: Monty Don shares the touching memorial in his garden to his late dog Nigel two months after his death

Monty Don has shared a beautiful memorial to his beloved dog Nigel who died two months ago.

The Gardener’s World presenter, 64, shared his pain in May after the golden retriever died after suddenly falling ill with violent, unstoppable seizures’.

Nigel had become the surprise star of BBC Two’s Gardeners’ World, receiving his own fan mail, social media fan accounts and even lent his name to Don’s book Nigel: My Family And Other Dogs.

On Instagram on Friday, the TV personality shared a snap of his new terracotta pot with a special engraving.

The plant pot had the message ‘Nigel 2008 – 2010’ at the bottom along with a small picture of the dog.

Monty captioned the post: ‘This arrived today from Whichford in memory of the old boy.

‘I shall have to plant it appropriately #tennisballtree.’

In May, the presenter announced the sad news as he paid tribute to his ‘old friend’ via his Twitter and Instagram accounts, telling his followers Nigel was ‘happy, healthy and his usual calm, lovely self’ right up until the end.

Don wrote on his social media accounts: ‘I am very sorry to announce that Nigel has died.

‘He filmed every moment of last Friday’s programme and right to the end was happy, healthy and his usual calm, lovely self.

‘But he was suddenly taken ill with violet, unstoppable seizures and despite everything that our wonderful vets could do he slipped quietly away with no pain or suffering and is now buried in the garden with lots of tennis balls.

‘Rest now old friend. See you in the sweet bye and bye.’

Before his book was published, Don said: ‘I am just as much a fan of Nigel as any besotted viewer.’

Nigel was frequently seen following Don around the garden with his other Dog Nellie.

Monty once said about why his trusty companion is so camera-friendly: ‘It helps that he is good looking – beautiful even – but what distinguishes him from other dogs is charisma, an unrivalled ability to inspire affection. He radiates goodwill.

‘I feel happier seeing him; he feels tremendously happy; we are all thoroughly cheered up.’

Last year, Don revealed on Twitter that Nigel had had surgery to remove some growths from his mouth.

He added: ‘It all went well, he is fine – if a bit sore – will have a quiet weekend and be ready for filming next week. He will, of course, play the starring role in tonight’s GW.’

Monty chose the name Nigel because he finds it amusing to give his pets common names.
