Mark Wright’s show The Bachelor has been axed by Channel 5 after just one series.

The decision comes as a blow to the former TOWIE star who was hoping to become a top TV host.

Bosses had hoped the revived version of the US hit would bring in ratings with Mark at the helm.

A spokeswoman told the Daily Star Sunday: ‘We can confirm that The Bachelor will not be returning for another series on Channel 5.’

The show returned last year to much fanfare with personal trainer Alex Marks as the eponymous bachelor looking for love.

Mark was paid a bumper fee for his presenting gig but it left fans and critics unimpressed.

Poor ratings and reviews which branded it ‘tired, predictable and a little offensive’ proved the death knell for the reality show.

A Channel 5 source said: ‘The bosses want to focus on more established stars who have been around for decades, like Tony Robinson and Chris Tarrant, rather than new talents like Mark.

‘They feel like the more serious shows are more likely to bring in big ratings.’

Before The Bachelor, Mark worked as a showbiz correspondent in the US for TV show Extra but his contract ended last year.

It comes after it was reportedly recently that Mark and his wife Michelle became the the richest young couple on television after earning £2.6 million in the past year.

The former Coronation Street actress’s firm Rosia Promotions Limited saw cash rise from £584,381 last year to a whopping £1,765,691.

The company is said to have cleared £1.2 million in 2019 and has ‘£1.7 million in cash in its coffers’ with dividends, tax and costs already taken out.

Michelle quit Coronation Street in 2014, where she reportedly earned £60,000 a year, and became a millionaire just three years after leaving the cobbles. The Mirror reports that she has raked in £4 million since leaving the ITV soap.

While her husband Mark’s firm, The Wright Looks, is said to have ‘reserves of £1,134,776’, making their combined worth from 2019 ‘£2,637,820’ – claims The Sun.

A source told the publication: ‘Michelle works incredibly hard and the rewards have come in for her.

‘It was a massive decision for her to leave Britain’s most popular show but she knew that she could make far more cash away from the Coronation Street.

‘She had to turn down a number of lucrative deals while she was on Corrie because soap stars aren’t allowed to advertise. Now she is free to do what she wants – and she is getting some amazing acting work, too.’

MailOnline has contacted both Michelle and Mark’s representatives for comment.

It comes after it was reported earlier this month that Mark and Michelle are reportedly set to become multi-millionaires after the former TOWIE star set up his own fitness company.

The presenter is said to have registered companies Train Wright and Mysa Active on May 22.
