MANCHESTER CITY and Celtic are locked in a Battle of Britain for Ecuador’s new sensation Jose Cifuentes.

Premier League champions City want to sign the brilliant midfielder and loan him to Spanish club Girona because he would not get a work permit immediately.

Manchester City will battle Celtic for Ecuador’s new sensation Jose Cifuentes

But Scottish kings Celtic hope to beat them to the deal and offer Cifuentes, the star of Ecuador’s Under-20 side, a move to Glasgow.

Work permit laws are less severe north of the border and Celtic have a great track record for bringing in players like Cifuentes.

They also hope to persuade him with the chance of Champions League football and chasing the Scottish title.

City want Cifuentes, 20, to play in Spain for a year until he gets his first senior cap and then bring him into Pep Guardiola’s squad.

The powerful youngster, who scored one of the best goals of the recent World Under-20 Cup in Poland, plays for Ecuador outfit America de Quito.

There are also German and Italian clubs on his trail but it looks like a straight fight now in the bargain £2.5million race for his signature.

Meanwhile, City are demanding that their Kosovo keeper Arijanet Muric, 20, gets game-time before letting him go to the Championship.

Nottingham Forest and Preston want the 6ft 6in stopper on loan but City want assurances that he starts in their team.

Hefty penalties would be applied if Muric is overlooked.

That is giving both outfits something to think about.
