Liverpool legend Steve Nicol disagrees with Jurgen Klopp that Sheffield United deserved a point in their Premier League clash on Saturday.
Following the Reds’ 1-0 win at Bramall Lane, Klopp suggested he could not complain if the match ended level.
“If it would have been a draw I would sit here and say that’s how it was today, Sheffield deserved it and that’s what we deserved,” the German said.
“But, with the goal, we got the three points and that leaves me pretty happy in the moment, obviously.”
However, Nicol disagrees and says Liverpool were definitely worthy winners in the Steel City.
The visitors wasted a number of chances in the first half, with Sadio Mane most notably going close to opening the scoring.
It took an horrendous goalkeeping error from United’s Dean Henderson to gift Georginio Wijnaldum the winning goal for Liverpool.
The Blades did come close to scoring through Leon Clarke, though replays showed he may well have been called offside.
So Nicol believes the right team won on the day.
“Listen, was it vintage? Absolutely not close to that,” Nicol told ESPN FC.
“I found it a little strange that after the game that Klopp said that they thought that Sheffield United deserved a draw.
“I’m not quite sure where he gets that [from].
“Well he is [being magnanimous] because the truth is Liverpool were the better side, Liverpool did create chances, Mane himself should have had two in the first half, he should have had a penalty in the second half and of course Salah was clean through with the goalie to beat as well.
“So yes Clarke may, may have done better with five minutes to go that could have got them the draw.
“But the truth is Liverpool deserved to win the game but it wasn’t vintage.”
