Liverpool star Joe Gomez has been criticised by Alan Hutton for his performance against Red Bull Salzburg, with the Scotsman predicting he could lose his spot in the team.
The Reds managed to survive a three-goal collapse against Salzburg on Wednesday, with Mohamed Salah’s goal earning them a 4-3 win.
Gomez was brought back into the team for the Champions League tie for what was only his third start of the season.
The centre-back has played second-fiddle to Matip throughout the season, but was given his chance in the team against Salzburg.
However, Liverpool put in a rare poor defensive performance, conceding three goals at home for the first time since January 2018, when they lost 3-2 to West Brom in the FA Cup.
And Hutton believes that the performance proves Matip will be the best partner for Van Dijk.
“Talking of van Dijk, I think he does play best alongside Matip, I think they complement each other well so bringing a new partnership in, I think it’s always best to keep with the same back four or three,” he told Football Insider.
“I can’t see this happening all that often, I think it’s a kind of one-off.
“I would have said so [Matip will return when fit].
“I think at the start of the season most people would have said it would be Gomez and van Dijk partnership.
“Matip’s come in and I think they work so well together.
“It’s been proven over the beginning week of the season.
“It looks good, those two working together, and I presume if fit that’ll be his number one partnership.”
Matip was forced out of the game through a minor injury, with Jurgen Klopp opting to give Gomez some time in the first-team.
But Matip is likely to return to face Leicester on Saturday [3pm KO].
