Joe Biden received his party’s official nomination to run as the Democratic candidate against Donald Trump after a four-day virtual Democratic National Convention (DNC). The former US Vice-President was praised for the optimistic acceptance speech he delivered from his Delaware, in which he insisted November’s vote is a choice between “darkness and light”. But BBC North America editor Jon Sopel was quick to point out a major flaw in the delivery as he commented on Mr Biden’s nomination.

Speaking to the BBC Today programme, Mr Sopel said: “The thing for Joe Biden is that the bar has been set so low for him from the Trump Campaign who repeatedly say he’s losing it, is he all there etcetera etcetera.

“He delivered a cogent, well-argued speech and people are going to say, ‘well, that’s fantastic,’ because the bar was low.

“I think he was powerful, he didn’t mention Donald Trump much by name but it was the counterpoint about everything in the speech, about the darkness and leading America into the light, healing the country.

“We can be better than this, we are the United States of America and the one word that has echoed through this week in all the people that have been interviewed and the other speakers is empathy.”

Mr Sopel added: “I suspect next week we’re going to hear a lot more about toughness.”

Joe Biden’s speech immediately sparked a Twitter reaction from US President Donald Trump, who accused the former vice-president of not delivering in over 47 years of political career.

Mr Trump wrote on his personal profile: “In 47 years, Joe did none of the things of which he now speaks. He will never change, just words!”

In his speech, Mr Biden said: “History has delivered us to one of the most difficult moments America has ever faced.

“Remember, Donald Trump has been talking for months about Joe Biden as mentally shot, a captive of the left, and yes Biden was reading from a teleprompter and a prepared speech, but I thought he blew a hole — a big hole — in that characterization.”

Mr Biden had been leading Mr Trump in recent election polls but the President has been slowly gaining ground in terms of his approval rate despite ongoing criticism over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

A recent YouGov poll carried out between August 17 and 19 showed 43 percent of 801 respondents approve of Mr Trump, a four percent increase from a July 6-July 10 Morning Consult survey on the US President’s performance.
