Instagram couple ask strangers to pay for their £9k Africa holiday because working ‘is not an option’ for them

AN Instagram couple have been slammed online after asking followers to pay for their £9,000 holiday to Africa because working “is not an option” for them.

Elena Engelhardt and her husband Catalin Onc, from Germany, document their exotic travels on their joint Instagram account Another Beautiful Day and boast over 34,500 followers.

Having visited everywhere from Bali, Nepal, Paris and Copenhagen in recent months, the German couple have now set their hearts on a tandem bike ride to Africa in July – but need to raise £9,000 to make this dream a reality.

But while most people would normally have to save up for months to fund this kind of holiday, the influencers are hoping their online following will provide them with the money they need.

The couple have set up a Go Fund Me page where they claim they want to take followers “on this huge adventure” before asking for money “towards the bike and gear, food and accommodation” as well as internet and SIM cards to keep their following in the loop.

They added: “Some will just tell us to get jobs, like everyone else and a stop begging.

“But when you have the impact we do on others’ life, getting a job is not an option.”

The duo insist that they want to “show the beauty of this planet and it’s inhabitants, but also the ugliness” on their journey which would supposedly raise awareness for mental health.

Anticipating that followers would tell them to fund the trip themselves, the couple said they didn’t want to “make fast money” through modelling as that would “advertise consumerism.”

What’s more, the couple insist that working would be “detrimental” to their lifestyle and currently relying on Catalin’s mother for financial support.

In a comment which was hastily deleted, Catalin wrote: “At this very moment, my mother is funding us, she works two jobs and has not much herself.

“We didn’t ask her for money but she loves that she is able to help. Mum, I want you to know, that it is not only us but hundreds of others that benefit from your help.”

In the eight days the campaign has been live, it’s only raised £170 of the £9,000 goal[/caption]

Unsurprisingly, this questionable arrangement didn’t sit well with fans who urged the “free-loading” couple to fund the trip themselves.

Commenting on their Go Fund Me Page – which has raised just £178 of the £9,000 goal in 8 days – one user raged: “You’re not impacting anyone’s life, you are just a couple of freeloaders trying to get holidays paid for by mugs.

“Stop sponging off your mum (aren’t you embarrassed?), stop begging, and stop trying to convince the world that great holidays for you two somehow improve the world.”

Another blasted the couple as “narcissistic and over privileged” and asked: “Who wouldn’t want to travel and not work?

“This only helps you, no one else benefits.”

LOOK WITHIN And with this post, I will step away from social media for a little while. I mentioned that I'll be doing the hardest thing I've ever done mentally and physically, soon. Here it is. I am going on a walk. I will walk as long as I possibly can. No sleep, No social media, No distractions. Just me and my brain out there. This first came to my mind in the Himalayan mountains, where I got to experience what my mind, body and soul are capable of. Now I'm going to take it even further. I am ready to face whatever is buried deep inside me. those doing the 30 day challenge, carry on. Remember why you started and keep moving forward. Much love to you all. Time to do some soul work.

Meanwhile, followers were left similarly bemused on the couple’s Instagram account.

One replied: “This just seems like an adventure and a fun trip for you both but it has no significant reason to help anyone else in any way.”

Seeing the funny side of it, a second joked: “You’re basically paying for these people to travel and play photography in foreign countries.”

In response to the backlash, Catalin has announced that he is going on a social media detox for the next 30 days to “do some soul work”.
