AN INNOCENT weatherman was battered and strangled by vigilantes after the mistook him for a paedophile.

Kevin Martin, 34, was approached by the men at a bar in California last Thursday who were holding a composite sketch of the man police are hunting after he made sexual comments to an 11-year-old girl.

He said one of the men was visibly intoxicated as they asked to speak outside.

He said: “He had his phone on him and he said, ‘This is you, isn’t it? We don’t allow your kind here.’

“The other guy starts pushing me and says, ‘You know, I got a daughter.’”

Mr Martin, who also had thick glasses, long hair and a moustache like the sketch, said he argued for 20 minutes trying to convince the vigilantes he wasn’t the suspect.

Mr Martin was strangled and punched at least 20 times after one of the men told him “I kill people like this”.

He told CNN: “I probably got 20 to 25 to blows back of the head. Four in the face, two in the jaw and one in forehead.”

‘YOU’RE GOING TO KILL ME’

He said a group of about 15 people watched the beating.

Mr Martin pleaded with his attackers: “If you keep punching me like this, you’re going to kill me.”

Two people eventually came to the rescue before Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene.

A man was arrested for battery and the investigation is ongoing.

The private meteorologist runs the Southern California Weather Force, a weather alert system with more than 70,000 followers.

He said he alerted police when the composite sketch came out because his followers were sending him messages and incident happened close to his home.

He said: “They said, ‘Kevin that looks exactly like you’.

“I was going to brush it off, but the incident took place about half a mile from my house.”

Sgt. Chad Fountain, Corona police spokesman said: “Our detectives interviewed him and ruled him out as a suspect.

“It’s unfortunate, we didn’t want anything to happen to Mr. Martin. We never named him as a suspect, so it’s unfortunate that this happened to him.”

Mr Martin is now at home recovering from his injuries.

The real suspect still hasn’t been caught as police confirm all possible leads have dried up.
