JULY CUP

GOLDEN oldies have a modest record in this high-class sprint with 28 horses aged older than five lining up in the past decade and just one winning.

That really does chop the field down to size with Brando, Cape Byron, Dream Of Dreams, Lim’s Cruiser, Limato and Major Jumbo overlooked for win purposes.

Given that Brando has a couple of places and Limato has won this race before, it would be no surprise to see either of them hit the frame again.

Official ratings have been a good pointer with only one of the past 10 winners any lower than 113. So we can overlook the claims of Glorious Journey, Fairyland, Pretty Pollyanna and So Perfect.

That means we are quickly down to a repeat of the Commonwealth Cup last time where Advertise won and Ten Sovereigns was more than two lengths away in fourth.

It’s another plus for both of those to have run at Royal Ascot while two or three runs earlier in the season is also the optimum.

ADVERTISE looked much the better horse over the 6f trip — which they tackle again today — and there’s no reason why the Aidan O’Brien runner should turn the form around.
