This Morning therapist Eva Speakman broke down on the show on Wednesday as she relived her harrowing ordeal at the hands of an abusive ex-partner in her past.
Eva opened up on “painful” memories of a past relationship, when she was physically and verbally abused – something she has never gotten over.
Joined by her supportive husband Nik, Eva confessed she felt “so much better” for talking about her domestic abuse hell, as she vowed to tackle her experiences head on all these years later.
Holly Willoughby was reduced to tears seeing her co-star struggle, as she detailed the horrific abuse she faced, including being hospitalised with a severe head injury after being headbutted by her abuser.
Eva was very emotional from the start of the interview, never having been able to talk about her experience before.
Eva confessed the romance started off like any other, but she believes she was “groomed” – with low self-esteem and being bullied at school making her vulnerable.
As the “gradual” abuse escalated, she was told she wasn’t allowed to talk to anyone without his permission, before a particular look on his face often warned her she was at risk of harm.
Towards the end of the relationship she confronted him while out in public, confident he wouldn’t hurt her around friends, but was left hospitalised after he brutally attacked her.
Eva explained her ex headbutted her three times, causing her to hit her head on the bar or the deck, with her rushed to hospital by her cousin.
Following the attack, doctors feared she had brain damage with injuries including loss of speech and spacial awareness.
Eva opened up on the moment she found the strength to end the relationship as she recovered at her parents’ home, as the ex showed up and attacked her father, breaking his nose.
She said: “When I saw him bust my dad’s nose I thought you can hurt me but not my family,” with this being the moment she said “enough”.
Pal Holly was left in tears over her heartbreaking ordeal, with viewers also praising Eva for speaking out.
Eva said the fact she “hadn’t discussed it” was the reason behind her struggling even now, before offering her advice to anyone facing domestic abuse.
She said: “I would say please realise that you have done absolutely nothing wrong.
“They won’t change, you think you can change them but they will not change and it will only get worse. I was lucky I lived with my parents, I dread to think what would have happened if not.”
On facing up to her ordeal, she said even though she “didn’t want to talk about” her experience in the past, she and Nik will now deal with what happened to her.
One supportive viewer tweeted: “what a brave amazing lady. I’m sitting here crying. Thank goodness she got her life back.”
Another commented: “Just wanted to give @TheSpeakmanss a huge hug, so brave telling her story.”
Holly told Eva she had “huge admiration” for her co-star, also praising her for opening up on such a “painful” experience.
This Morning airs weekdays and Sundays at 10:30am on ITV.
