Fantasy football tips: 5 Premier League players to avoid picking at the start of the season

The new Premier League season is just around the corner and fantasy football managers are putting the finishing touches on their teams.

Internationals tournaments have thrown a spanner into the plans of Dream Team gaffers and a number of last season’s big hitters are now likely to miss the opening weeks of the season.

Fantasy football tips: 5 Premier League players to avoid picking at the start of the season

1 Sadio Mane (£6m)

ManE of the moment

It’s no secret that Mane’s status as a midfielder on Dream Team makes him one of the most appealing assets around.

However, after a 55-game season that ended with Senegal’s AFCON final defeat, Mane is in need of a lengthy rest ahead of the new campaign.

Jurgen Klopp has given updates on the fitness of Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino while remaining tight-lipped about Mane.

All signs point towards last season’s seventh-highest points scorer missing at least the first two games of the season.

2 Riyad Mahrez (£4m)

Left out in the cold

Mahrez was a victim of Pep Guardiola’s strict rotation policy last season and failed to ever build up a consistent run of appearances.

The winger went all the way in the AFCON as Algeria were crowned champions and will be due a rest after his tournament exploits.

Partner his lack of match fitness with Guardiola’s tendency to use Mahrez only as a squad player, he’s definitely one to avoid in the opening few weeks of the season.

Why you should play Dream Team this season

  • It’s completely free to play
  • You can play THREE games – Season, Weekender and Draft
  • There’s a hefty jackpot up for grabs across 2019/20

3 Matt Doherty (£3.5m)

Takes no prisoners

The streets won’t forget Doherty’s remarkable 2018/19 season.

The Wolves defender became Dream Team’s must-have bargain buy when he started the season at just £1.5m and seemed to pop up with goals or assists every weekend.

Doherty finished the campaign with an outrageous 189 points but has revealed he will miss Wolves’ season opener against Leicester because of injury.

It’s likely the wing-back extraordinaire will also be forced to sit out the visit of Man United a week later having only just started training again this week.

4 Heung-min Son (£5m)

Cheers, Son’s crying

Son became a Dream Team managers’ best friend last season and is currently the sixth most popular forward so far.

That’s because many of you have forgotten the Spurs man is still serving a two-match suspension for a red card that he picked up at the end of last season.

Son is definitely worth getting into your team at some point this season, but you’re far better off waiting until late August before transferring him in.

5 Harry Kane (£7m)

Phil Jones facials

We’ve saved the most controversial until last.

Harry Kane is currently the fifth-most popular player on Dream Team but are you all making a big mistake?

We can’t help but ignore his track record of failing to deliver in August, a curse he eventually broke last season having gone a total of 15 matches in August without a goal.

Spurs also have a difficult-looking start to the season with away trips to Arsenal and Man City coming in their opening four games.

Tricky opposition paired with Kane’s historical August impotence could be a recipe for disaster for Dream Team managers.

Who are the most expensive players on fantasy football?

We initially teased just a handful of the player prices for this season’s Dream Team game over on our Twitter.

And in the process we revealed who the most expensive player is – or should we say PLAYERS ARE – this season.

After much deliberating and number crunching, Mo Salah and Sergio Aguero lead the way on £7.5m at the top of the charts.

Reigning champions

Behind them is Harry Kane on £7m, which could prove a bargain if the Spurs man can stay fit.

The rest of the player prices have officially been finalised ahead of game launch. Find them here.

What is Dream Team Draft and how does it work?

Kevin De Bruyne is always a smart buy – get him on Draft so your mates can’t use him

As we mentioned, we’ve launched a Draft game this season and to say we’re excited would be an understatement.

Draft pits you in a league against other managers as you try to build a 15-man squad to takes you to the top.

But the key difference is if you own a player, nobody else in your league can have them.

That’s right, if you have Salah in your team, then that means Steve from HR doesn’t.

Game weeks work on a head-to-head basis which means leagues must consist of an even number to work.
