Emmerdale viewers were in tears on Thursday night, as Robert Sugden handed himself in to the police amid his plan to go on the run with husband Aaron Dingle.
Robron were torn apart in devastating scenes, as Aaron was forced to watch on as Robert was arrested over the murder of Lee.
Actor Ryan Hawley recently quit the ITV soap as Robert, with a twist seeing him facing a murder charge after his attack on sister Victoria’s rapist Lee who later died from his injuries.
He and Aaron vowed to go on the run, and almost got away with it but Robert had a change of heart, with it said he did it for his husband.
Viewers suspected he might make the decision after his emotional chat with Aaron just moments before.
He told him: “I love you, always,” which sounded very much like a goodbye, despite Aaron believing they were going on the tun.
Aaron was meeting his mum Chas nearby from their meeting point, to say goodbye to her and collect some cash.
There were police everywhere so the men were hiding out in woodlands, before Robert told his partner to go and meet Chas.
The plan was to meet back on the lay-by with the money and a car, but it soon became apparent Robert had other ideas.
As Aaron went to rejoin him, he heard the police approaching where they were meant to be meeting.
Aaron fled over there to see the police arresting Robert, who was now carrying an apologetic look on his face as a tearful Aaron watched on.
He tried to race over to them and reach his husband, but stepfather Paddy and sister Liv held him back as he broke down.
It’s then that he realised Robert had given himself up while he was gone, with mum Chas claiming he’d done it for him not wanting to ruin his life by taking him on the run.
Aaron broke down as he struggled with events, not knowing how he could live without him.
Emotional viewers took to Twitter over the scenes, with some expecting the twist as others admitted they were in tears.
One fan said: “Paddy and Liv holding Aaron back as Robert turns himself in. Nah… I just can’t.”
Another tweeted: “I’m acc crying … why the f**k did Robert hand himself in ffs.”
A third added: “Robert saying goodbye to Aaron and Aaron not even realising ‘I love you, always’.”
Meanwhile, a fourth added: “Aaron loves Robert so such that he’ll spend the rest of his life on the the run just to be with him. Robert loves Aaron so much that he’ll go to prison for murder so Aaron doesn’t have to be on the run and never see his family. They love each other so much.”
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
