British soaps, including EastEnders, Emmerdale, Coronation Street and Hollyoaks, have aired huge and important storylines over the years.
Currently, the shows are bigger than ever, with ongoing plots including pregnancy twists, death fears and grooming scandals.
But where were some of our favourite soap characters 10 years ago, and how has that impacted their plots today?
This week a decade ago all four soaps were airing some huge storylines, including a devastating fire, family feuds and a surprise arrival…
In June 2009, Walford saw the beginning of Syed Masood and Christian Clarke’s affair, while Syed’s family had no idea he was gay.
This week 10 years ago, Syed was trying to encourage his mother Zainab to get along with his girlfriend Amira, but she felt like the new woman in his life was taking her son away from her.
Meanwhile, there was heartbreak for Whitney Dean as her biological mother Debra showed up in Albert Square, much to the annoyance of adoptive mother Bianca Jackson.
It all ended in tears though, as Whit thought she was moving away with her mum only to learn she didn’t want her to go with her, and was simply using her for her dodgy dealings.
Elsewhere, Tanya Branning was conflicted over her feelings for ex-husband Max, three years on from his affair with Stacey.
Little did they know then that eight years later their family would be rocked by a devastating event, as daughter Abi Branning was killed after falling off The Queen Vic roof, while Max’s son Bradley suffered the same fate in 2010.
In Weatherfield, a shock affair was blooming while there was family trouble for the Platts.
Pregnant Maria Connor was preparing to welcome the birth of her baby son, following the tragic death of her partner Liam.
Liam’s killer Tony tried to worm his way into her life, supporting her and wanting to be there for her child, growing guilty about causing his death by hiring someone to run him over.
Over at the Platts, and David set Gary Windass up after a robbery, leading to the two boys coming to blows.
David ended up being practically disowned for framing Gary when the truth came out – little did they know 10 years later they would become in-laws, while that hasn’t lasted after David’s sister Sarah dumped Gary.
Also on the Cobbles, Molly took up running with Kevin, with the sessions leading to a shock affair, betraying her partner Tyrone. Molly eventually fell pregnant with Kevin’s son, Jack.
Over in the Dales in 2009, Andy Sugden began to leave his loved ones concerned ahead of his mental breakdown.
The character was later diagnosed with depression, as events in his personal life including the death of his adoptive father Jack Sugden left him in turmoil.
He began to distance himself from family including young daughter Sarah, and his odd behaviour left everyone worried.
Elsewhere, the Dingles and the Kings were at war as Carl hassled Debbie over money that she owed him.
Cain and Carl continued to clash, as he made huge offers to him to clear his daughter’s debts.
It was a big few weeks in Hollyoaks a decade ago, with one villain’s return spelling the end of another – or so everyone thought at the time.
In scenes that aired a week earlier, Claire Devine came back to the village to take revenge on Justin Burton and Warren Fox.
She tied Warren up and ended up attacking Justin’s girlfriend Hannah Ashworth, before setting fire to the nightclub.
Warren died in the scenes, leading to Justin fleeing the village after being accused of his murder. Claire was eventually caught though, and Justin never returned.
In a twist a year later, Warren returned from the dead as it was confirmed he escaped The Loft before killing someone else, and chucking their body into the burning building to pretend he’d died.
Meanwhile, Justin didn’t flee alone, as Russ Owen ran away with his baby son Max after the McQueens tried to get custody.
