EastEnders cruelly aired a devastating death twist for Mel Owen on Thursday night, after making viewers believe she would survive.
Mel had been involved in a car crash with Sharon Mitchell on Tuesday night, with fans made to wait until Thursday’s episode for her fate to be revealed.
In the latest episode, Mel was trapped in the car with rival Sharon racing to save her with fans quickly learning Mel was injured but alive.
Suddenly the car set alight, and as the flames grew bigger heavily pregnant Sharon faced a battle to rescue Mel and get them away from the burning vehicle.
Mel could hear Hunter, her dead son, talking to her and wouldn’t move before realising the severity of the situation – she then grabbed Sharon’s hand and she was able to pull her out of the wreckage.
Seconds later the car burst into flames, with Sharon and Mel just managing to escape to the side of the road.
Mel told Sharon she should have left her to die, but she refused to let that happen.
Suddenly she revealed she was hearing her son, who died in the siege in September, with her convinced he was in the car.
Sharon reminded her enemy that her son was dead, but Mel called her a liar before making her way back to the flame-covered car.
Despite Sharon’s screams, Mel continued to hear Hunter calling for her and began to cross the road.
Tragedy struck though as suddenly a lorry horn could be heard, but Mel was too focused on Hunter to notice.
Then, she saw the lorry heading right for her and looked back to a horrified Sharon before being hit in the road.
Mel’s lifeless body was seen lying in the road with paramedics confirming her death while covering her with a blanket.
A tearful Sharon broke the news to Phil on the phone in the ambulance unable to comprehend what had just happened.
Viewers were stunned by the twist and heartbroken for Mel as her grief for Hunter led to her death, with many not expecting her to be killed off after the initial crash.
EastEnders airs Mondays and Fridays at 8pm, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One.
