In tonight’s episode she was seen drifting in and out of consciousness as she retold stories of her past to her ginger cat.

Fearing it could be the end of her life, Rita said: “Well Arthur (the cat) if this is it, I’m ready to go. I’ve had a good innings.

“I’m not afraid. What’s there to be afraid of?

“I’ve loved and I’ve been loved in return. I never thought I’d spend my last hours with another red-head.”

The emotional moment brought tears to viewers’ eyes as they feared the worst.

Her friends and neighbours thought she had gone away for Christmas after Rita lied so they wouldn’t feel sorry for her being alone.

But instead she turned the lights out to fix her tree and twisted her ankle on the step causing the entire thing to fall over and pin her to the floor.

But thankfully, Jenny and Mary came to check on Rita just in time and found her unconscious.

Jenny couldn’t find a pulse and said Rita was stone cold as she confessed she’d “never forgive herself” if she didn’t pull through.

After the ambulance arrived, a paramedic said Rita was severely dehydrated but that she was going to survive.

A soap fan said: “Yay well done Jenny & Mary”

Another added: “Best bit of this scene is Mary smashing the door in”

Someone else said: “Thank the Lord!!”

Corrie fans had feared Arthur the cat would eat Rita

Viewers had previously feared she would be eaten by her cat if her friends hadn’t turned up in time.

It appears the newsagent – who is played by actress Barbara Knox in the ITV soap – will survive her nasty accident.

But others on the cobbles won’t be so lucky this festive season with at at least one death on Christmas Day – the first ever in the soap’s 59 year history.
