Sarasota High graduate was starting second baseman for the Spartans
Nick Derr is a national champion.
The former Sarasota High player was part of the University of Tampa baseball team that won the Division II title last week.
An infielder, Derr started at second base for the No. 3 Spartans in the final, a 3-1 win over No. 1 Colorado Mesa on Saturday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.
In his first year with Tampa, Derr, a junior, batted .298 with 8 home runs and 37 runs batted in, 45 runs scored and 8 stolen bases in 51 games.
He had six three-hit games, including one in his second game with the Spartans (45-14).
The right-handed hitter, who went 0-for-3 in the championship game, batted .318 in Sunshine State Conference games.
A 33rd round pick by Cincinnati out of Sarasota High, the 6-foot, 185-pound Derr spent his first two collegiate years at Florida State, where he hit .212 in 50 games last year and .225 in 50 games as a freshman.
