A CHILD has died after being crushed by an ice sculpture at Luxembourg City’s Christmas market, say cops.
The sculpture “collapsed and a block of ice unfortunately hit a young child,” they added.
Luxembourg police said that the child – possibly a toddler – was initially “severely injured” by the toppled ice, but “died in the ambulance”.
The youngster was struck by the block while visiting the Place Guillaume at about 8pm yesterday.
Local media were told by visitors that paramedics had tried to resuscitate the child at the scene.
Police have cordoned off the area while they investigate his death.
Le Quotidien says that the “tragedy occurred near the ice rink, next to the large wooden chalet at the market.”
The publication adds that yesterday afternoon, an ice house was built, for people to pose in front of for photos.
It added that “for some unknown reason, the sculpture collapsed on to the child.”
The market was evacuated as a result.
