BRITAIN’S Got Talent winner Colin Thackery revealed that he is giving his £250,000 prize money to Royal Chelsea Hospital during an appearance on This Morning.
The 89-year-old Army veteran and singer, won the hearts of the nation and sang his way to victory as he beat magician X in last night’s live final.
Colin’s humble response to host Phillip Schofield’s question on how he will spend the money will no doubt warm the nation’s hearts a little more.
He insisted that rather than pocket the money himself, he intends to give the money to the London hospital where he lives in sheltered accommodation alongside other veterans.
“Well first of all the hospital, because we are a charity and we are always collecting for something,” said Colin.
“We’ve got a new centre that we’ve been wanting to build, a visitors centre, activity centre. I’d love to think that I set the whole thing off.”
He added: “And of course I’ve got family. I’ve got grandchildren wanting to get on the property ladder and all that sort of thing and of course A-Levels and all that.”
Following his win on last night’s show, an emotional Colin was overwhelmed at his success and was overjoyed at winning the opportunity to perform at the Royal Variety Performance in front of the Queen.
He told Ant and Dec: “I’m absolutely astonished. The backing I’ve had has been fantastic.”
On performing for the Queen, he added: “That’s the job. That’s what I wanted.”
During the show, the Chelsea pensioner earned a standing ovation for his moving rendition of Love Changes Everything.
As his song came to an end, the crowd chanted his name.
“What a magic moment you have created on this show,” Walliams said.
“I think tonight you are unbeatable.”
Holden said she knew Thackery was not taking part because of the fame and glamour.
“I know that this is because you served your country and I hope tonight that they serve you,” she said.
Meanwhile, fans took to Twitter to reveal that they were in ‘floods of tears’ following his emotional performance.
“Colin Thackeray has brought out all my emotions on every single performance. As if my mind isn’t all over the place already, he has my heart,” commented one.
While another added: “Wow! So many emotions right now. What a beautiful performance from Colin Thackeray #BGT2019“
And a third said: “@Offical_BGT let Colin Thackeray sing at the royal variety performance regardless #Hero #wartimeveteran #niceman”
