Whether you’re a member of the BeyHive or a fan of the Disney’s live action film The Lion King, you won’t want to miss Black is King this summer on Disney Plus.

Available to stream now, the rich and vibrant ‘visual album’ written, directed and executive produced by Beyoncé is ‘a celebratory memoir for the world on the black experience’ and ‘reimagines the the lessons of the Lion King’, according to Disney.

It accompanies the singer-songwriter’s The Lion King: The Gift, an album she released in 2019 coinciding with The Lion King film release that summer.

Black is King honours the voyages of Black families, throughout time, in a tale about a young king’s transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity.

His ancestors help guide him toward his destiny, and with his father’s teachings and guidance from his childhood love, he earns the virtues needed to reclaim his home and throne.

Black Is King was in production for one year and features special guests such as models Aweng Ade-Chuol and Adut Akech, supermodel Naomi Campbell, Tina Knowles-Lawson, author and Academy Award-winning actor Lupita Nyong’o, singer Kelly Rowland, Pharrell Williams and JAY-Z, among others. Many artists featured on ‘The Lion King: The Gift’ album also make appearances.

Filmed from locations all across the globe including New York, Los Angeles, South Africa, West Africa, London and Belgium, the film’s vibrant cinematography captures a beautiful cast of actors and dancers and stunning landscapes across continents.

Yesterday, the 24-time Grammy Award-winner dropped the official video for her song Already from Black is King. 

She also released a Deluxe Edition of her album The Lion King: The Gift, which features two new songs, Black Parade, which she released on Juneteenth, and a remix of Find Your Way Back with MELO-X.
