Ariel Winter recently revealed she’d lost weight after switching her antidepressants medication — but now she’s warning fans.
The Modern Family star said she initially didn’t have a problem with putting on weight when taking antidepressants, but when the medication proved to be ineffective and she switched to another brand — that’s when her weight dropped.
On Monday, her admission led to one of her Instagram followers commenting on a recent video of the actress asking for advice.
“Hi, so I read online that you changed meds and you were able to lose the weight you gained,” the fan wrote, detailing her own medications. “May I ask what are the meds you are on now that have helped? Any info would be helpful so I can talk to my doctor.”
Winter replied saying she avoided mentioning brand names in the past because as different medications affect people in different ways and “everyone’s systems work differently”, she didn’t want to offer advice on the subject.
“My psychiatrist and therapist both advised me that it could be potentially harmful to anyone who thinks that since it worked for me it will automatically work for them,” Winter told the fan.
“Just because it changed the weight side effect for me doesn’t mean it will for everyone.
“Personally, all of the meds I’d tried before gave me the opposite side effects than the common ones I’d been told to look out for.”
Winter explained she tried more than 10 different medications over the course of a few years, but finally found ones that make her feel better instead of just a baseline “meh”.
“It’s an extremely difficult process to go through, but eventually you’ll realise all of the trials are worth it. Stay strong,” she told her follower.
Winter opened up about her weight loss in January after an Instagram follower accused her of taking “coke/meth” to drop 13kg.
She took to her social media again in April to set the record straight after a fan asked “Why so thin?” during an Instagram story Q&A.
“For years I had been on antidepressants that caused me to gain weight that I couldn’t lose no matter what I did,” she responded.
“It was always frustrating for me because I wanted to be able to get fit and feel like the work I was doing was paying off, but it never felt that way. I had accepted it and moved on.”
She explained that she stayed on her first medications for a long time because the process to go off antidepressants is “really long and difficult” and was taxing on her body.
“I wasn’t ready to go through it again so I just accepted feeling meh instead of trying to find something to actually feel better,” she wrote.
Eventually, Winter found a medication that ended up being right for her.
“The change in medication instantly made me drop all of the weight I couldn’t lose before by just giving me back a metabolism,” she explained. “That was very unexpected.”
