MORE than half of knife criminals get away without being jailed, shocking new stats show.

The revelation came as it emerged the number of knife crimes going through the courts has hit a seven-year high.

Police and politicians are under pressure to crack down on Britain’s knife epidemic thanks to rising concerns about violent crime.

Official stats from the Ministry of Justice show that more than 21,000 knife offences have been dealt with by the authorities over the past year – a 6 per cent rise since 2017.

The last time the number of knife crimes was so high was 2011.

Only 37 per cent of those caught with a blade were sent straight to prison.

19 per cent got a suspended sentence, with 23 per cent sentenced to community service.

More than 3,000 knife criminals got away with only a fine or a caution.

Even many repeat offenders are avoiding jail – with just 61 per cent being given an immediate custodial sentence.
