The port authority worker was rushed to hospital around 9am on Tuesday after being discovered with head injuries and the onset of hypothermia.

He is thought to have lost his balance after staying behind to smoke a cigarette while his wife returned to their holiday accommodation following a night out.

He was found on rocks by El Toro beach near the popular resort of Santa Ponsa.

Local police sources said there was no evidence he had been the victim of any crime and everything was pointing to the incident being the result of an accident.

They said they thought he had fallen around 2am on Tuesday – the time his wife as well as friends who were reportedly with them went on ahead while he stayed behind saying he would catch up with them later at their holiday apartment.

Mr Anderson is understood to have flown to Majorca with wife Ellen, 59, and daughter Eilidh, 27, at the weekend.

He works as a shore superintendent with the Lerwick Port Authority and is an administrator for the island’s LGBT Facebook page.
